6th Village Stop: Hopi House
The Hopi House turned 100 in 2005: The historic building opened in 1905, just steps away from the edge of the canyon on the South Rim. Built in Hopi architecture, and designed by Mary Elizabeth Jane Colter, it became known as the first gift store at the Grand Canyon. Hopi House offers a large selection of native arts and crafts such as kachinas, jewelry, handcrafted Navajo rugs and authentic pueblo pottery. The second-floor Fred Harvey Gallery is said to have a variety of museum-quality items available for purchase, but was closed while we were there.

We have some of these rugs in different sizes in our home. This one happens to be 24 inches in diameter. It is so handy that they are machine wash and dry. Easy to care for. Will last a long time. I used two strands of yarn for extra thickness and softness.

Hush: Moving From Silence to Healing After Childhood Sexual Abuse

Childhood sexual abuse is running rampant, yet it's the best-kept secret in our nation today. Its victims grow into adulthood with their little child's heart trapped in the pain and torment of their past. Nicole Braddock Bromley shares her own story and the steps to moving from silence to healing. Hush exposes the harsh realities of childhood abuse, explains the pain it causes, examines the false beliefs it creates, and empowers survivors to begin a personal journey toward healing by breaking the silence. With words of understanding and comfort, Nicole tells the real-life stories of those whose voices would otherwise never be heard. She is straightforward enough to pierce the hearts of those in a survivor's circle of influence, yet careful to tread lightly on what could be tender words.

Bromley College

Bromley College

Bromley College

"The College is what was more often called a hospital, i.e. almshouses, founded by John Warner, Bishop of Rochester, under whose Will of 1666 a college was to be built for 'twenty poore widowes (of orthodoxe & loyall clergymen)'. The land was not acquired until 1669, and an Act authorising building passed in 1670. Work went ahead at once, to the design of Richard Ryder, and was completed in 1672. The college forms a quadrangle presenting a long front to the road, with the treasurer's (l) and chaplains (r) houses as moderately projecting wings. The widows were spaciously housed, with two rooms on the ground floor, two bedrooms and a semi-basement kitchen. Each was expected to be attended by one resident servant and, if possible by a spinster daughter. The Building is of red brick , with raised bands between the storeys. Hipped roof. Grand stone central entrance arch, reaching right up to the eaves. Big curved pediment with the bishop's arms, supported on doric half-columns. Triangular porch canopies in the wings, flanked by little bulls eye windows with little round-headed windows on the upper level. This is teh sort of architecture popularly associated with Sir Christopher Wren. But that is to place its origin considerably too late, for the style had developed even before the civil war, and became the speciality of the masons and bricklayers of the City of London before, and even after, the Great Fire. The College is memorable as one of the largest, one of the soberest, and one of the earlier examples to survive" Pevsner

Silk and Secrets: Book 2 of the Silk Trilogy

Silk and Secrets: Book 2 of the Silk Trilogy

The Desert Flower

At seventeen, fiery Juliet Cameron fell passionately in love and married the perfect companion for the adventurous life she wanted to lead. Lord Ross Carlisle is handsome, dashing, and as eager to explore the world as she is. But social constraints and fear of an all consuming love that threatens to engulf her independent spirit send Juliet fleeing to the distant land where she was raised as a diplomat’s child.

Now, a dozen years later, a gentleman’s promise sends Lord Ross on a dangerous rescue mission to Central Asia—and to a shocking reunion with his long estranged wife. Warily they join forces to cross the merciless desert to Bokhara, where Juliet’s army officer brother has been imprisoned. The fierce attraction that drew them together so many years before has never died. But if they succumb to passion, can either of them survive if they cannot heal their broken marriage?

The Silk Trilogy:

#1 Silk and Shadows
#2 Silk and Secrets
#3 Veils of Silk

* Winner of Romantic Times Reviewer’s Choice award for best historical sequel * Nominated for RWA’s Golden Choice Award for best romance of the year.

Praise for Silk and Secrets:

“[Silk and Secrets] fulfills every dream of your heart, every yearning of your soul, as a pair of memorable lovers find their way back to each other’s arms . . . This remarkable novel of high adventure and unquenchable love is a stunning reading experience, one you will remember and cherish forever.”

--Melinda Helfer, Romantic Times, 4+ review

“...Sheer brilliance. [Silk and Secrets’] historical vibrancy and vitality bring to mind Dorothy Dunnett with a dash of Indiana Jones... Ms. Putney’s descriptions convey both the romanticism and the harshness of the dunes and their nomads. Traveling with a desert caravan, Ross and Juliet talk and fight and laugh, sometimes as the only way out of a tight spot, and I loved every word of it. I also loved Ross, a Lawrence of Arabia (oh heavens, Peter O’Toole) sans homosexuality crossed with Francis Crawford sans self-destructiveness – a true gentleman, and super, super hot. And Juliet was such a vital, complex woman – proud but not blinkered, hot-tempered but not TSTL, and humorous to boot – that damned if I didn’t wish she were a) my friend, b) running for president...."

Putney Bridge (From Pryor's Bank)

Putney Bridge (From Pryor's Bank)

Putney Bridge was designed by civil engineer Sir Joseph Bazalgette as a five-span structure, built of stone and Cornish granite. (Joseph Bazalgette also designed London's sewerage system, and the Putney Bridge forms part of this system.) It was constructed by John Waddell of Edinburgh, whose tender of ?240,433 was accepted on 15 April 1882. It is some 700 ft long (210 m) and 43 ft wide (13 m), and was opened by the Prince (later King Edward VII) and Princess of Wales on 29 May 1886.
Putney Bridge is unique in that it is the only bridge in Britain to have a church at both ends[citation needed]: the ancient St. Mary's Church, Putney is located in Putney on the south bank; All Saints Church, Fulham is on the north bank and featured in the film The Omen. Also nearby the north side of the bridge is Putney Bridge tube station
In March 1953, British serial killer and necrophiliac, John Christie was finally arrested on Putney Bridge.

Zippy Knocks Over The Salsa

Here's the always
adventurous little
beamish kitty boy
Zippy Zollo. There are
few things he finds more
fascinating than liquids, and how
the flow out of overturned
receptacles. He'll knock something
over and then watch with
intense interest as it
spills and flows.
In this instance, he overturned
a little bowl of red salsa
onto our white carpet,
and stood on his back legs
watching as it flowed around,
and me, rather than cleaning
it up, which would have been my
wife's preference,
grabbed the camera,
of course.
